God, I love wedges. The higher the better – but that’s just my personal need to be intimidating. Needles to say, I am thrilled that this season it is a veritable wedge wonderland out there – see how seamlessly I incorporated the title of this post?
Why are wedges so great? Well, technically, they mitigate the height of the heel you are wearing with the platform in the front of the shoe. So, if you are wearing a five inch heel and your front platform (I’m making the assumption your shoe has a front platform) is 2 inches, to your foot it only feels like its wearing a 3″ heel. Simple. Buyer beware – I neeeeever advocate the purchase of a wedge with no platform in the front. Why bother – they are almost as uncomfortable on the ball of your foot as a traditional heel unless they are really low heeled and in that case – they’re probably ugly anyway. Back to the point, wedges are also much more stable than a stiletto type heel. One is not apt to get them stuck in between a crack only to be forced to abandon said shoe and walk like an idiot with one shoe until buying a new pair (falls into “Emergency” category of budget). One also will never find the entirely of their heel sinking into the grass should you find yourself perched atop a grassy knoll for some reason.
A great pair of wedges can be found in all price points right know as they have flooded the market. Now the cheetah wedge featured in the above image is from Guipeppe Zanotti’s Fall collection and insanely amazing. Sadly, it costs about $1200 and unless I wanted to feed my kids packets of Sweet & Low (I have stolen my fair share), not a possibility for many of us. Happily, to the rescue comes my fabulous Jeffrey Campbell and the online ground zero for his designs – Solestruck. From the “99”, one of his original and most desired silhouettes, to the “Pixie” ankle boot on through the “Alicia” ankle wedge, all these come in just under $200 and are available in cheetah for that splash of spice, basic black kid leather and in the case of the “99” many other colors and fabrications. Looove you Jeffrey and Solestruck…. did I mention how genius you are? Still awkwardly sucking up for free shoes….
If you are still not willing to plonk down two bills to buy into this look, go to Amazon and they will have tons more to accommodate even the most reasonable budget requests.
I like to think of the wedge as a modern day burning of my bra. A veritable celebration of woman’s choice to be taller, fashionable and yet comfortable. So, save those stilettos for your husband’s dominatrix fetish and enter the wonderful world of wedges.
Big kiss.
